Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth are the final set of molars. Teeth that remain partially or completely within the soft tissue and/or the jawbone are called "impacted." Impacted teeth can become infected and can crowd adjacent teeth. The most serious problem occurs when tumors or cysts form around the impacted wisdom tooth, resulting in the destruction of the jawbone and healthy teeth. Erupting wisdom tooth may shift other teeth leading to poor alignment of the teeth. Wisdom teeth that lean toward the second molars make those teeth more vulnerable to decay by entrapping plaque and debris. Partially erupted wisdom teeth allow for bacteria to colonize around the tooth causing an infection, which results in pain and swelling. They are also more prone to decay and gum disease because their hard-to-reach location makes brushing and flossing difficult. When they do not erupt properly, generally, wisdom teeth have to be removed. An x-ray can be taken, and can help determine the most appropriate time for extraction.
